Accelerated Reader (AR)

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor student independent reading practice. Students pick a book at their own level. When finished, student takes a short quiz on the computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that student understood what they read.
Teacher then set goals and direct ongoing reading practices. Students choose books at an appropriate readability level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that students can pass the quiz and experience success.
STAR Reading is a computerized reading assessment that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to students’ responses. If the student response is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the student misses a question, the difficulty level is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 15-30 minutes.

Teachers use Lexile measures to customize their instruction to their students to their individual reading ability. Iftin uses Lexiles to help students choose the “just right” book for Accelerated Reader and their independent reading. Students’ scores will be accessible in Accelerated Reader, making it easier for teachers and librarians to set point goals for students
